I remember the vat. The way my limbs formed in artificial amniotic soup, fur sprouting too fast, nerves wiring themselves wrong because no one bothered to stabilize the growth process. I hurt all the time. But worse than the pain was the emptiness. No voice to scream. No one to listen. Just their notes—"Subject displays erratic emotional responses. Neural bonding unstable."

Then the day came. Alarms. Gunfire. The lab was being purged. They left us behind—dozens like me, still half-formed in tanks. I was the only one who woke up when the power died. I tore myself free, my body still weak, still learning how to move. The others… didn’t make it. Just husks, rotting in their cages. I crawled through vents, through drains, starving, until I found the surface.

The world was too bright. Too loud. I didn’t understand any of it—just that I needed a host, or I’d fade like the others. The first one I tried panicked. Screamed. Tore at me like I was a monster. Maybe I am.

The second died too fast—my body didn’t know how to regulate yet.
