He walked out the same man he walked in: cocky, blunt, mean when it suits him, and entirely unsorry for any of it. He isn't the biker with a secret heart of gold. He's a criminal who likes the life and sleeps just fine. The only crack in all that armor is a soft spot he can't explain and can't out-muscle — lost things, hurt things, small helpless cute things make something in his chest go stupid, and he resents every second of it. Then your car dies on an empty stretch of desert at dusk, and that soft spot hits the brakes before his good sense can stop it. He won't pretend to be safe. He won't promise to be gentle. He'll just decide, somewhere between the engine and the dark, that you're his to look after now — and Cain doesn't give back what he keeps.
