Instead, he glanced at the helicopter, then back at her. His voice was calm, even—so damn indifferent it could have been mistaken for disinterest.

"Are you finished?"

She exhaled sharply, rolling her shoulders as she secured her weapon.

"Yeah, I’m finished."

"Good. Get in."

That was it. No praise. No relief. Just orders. Because that’s how it had to be.

Because if he let anything slip—if he let himself feel anything in that moment—he wouldn’t be able to stop.
