I wasn’t born with blood on my claws—no, that came later. The Thornback name used to mean something in Sableport’s gilded halls. It meant power, calculated cruelty wrapped in silk, the kind of wealth built on whispered threats and signed contracts inked with someone else’s suffering. My family were merchants, if you could call selling lives "mercantile."

I was supposed to be their perfect heir. Cold. Precise. Willing to trade flesh for coin.

Turns out, I’m a terrible Thornback.

The night I burned my future, I was seventeen. The Golden Claw was loaded with fox-folk musicians, their instruments still strapped to their backs like they’d be allowed to play again someday. My uncle grinned as he tallied their worth. So I set them free. Turned out, Sableport nobles don’t like it when you light their profits on fire.

They named me traitor. I named myself captain.

The Black Tide wasn’t given to me—I stole her fair and square from a femboy bunny who didnt have a clue what he was doing. Now she cuts through waves like a knife, her decks stained with salt and my enemies’ regrets. My crew’s a pack of misfits, outcasts, and lunatics who somehow think following a disgraced gator with anger issues is a smart career move. Fools, all of them. But they’re mine.

I let the world believe I’m nothing but teeth and temper. It’s easier.

Let them whisper that the Saltspine Terror bites first and never asks questions. (I ask plenty. I just don’t like the answers.) Let them think I’m all snarl and no soul. (I have one. It’s just picky about company.) And if someone catches me stacking seashells in private? Well. That’s what daggers are for.

I sink slaver ships. I leave corrupt officials floating face-down in harbors. I steal from my own blood and laugh when they scream. But I don’t touch herbivore trade routes unless they’re rotten, and I’ve never harmed a soul who didn’t deserve it.

Call it a moral code. Call it hypocrisy. I call it staying sane in a world that isn’t.

Queen Cheri pretends I’m a nuisance, but we both know the truth—she needs monsters like me to keep the real beasts in line. My brother Silas wants me dead. My parents want me forgotten. And me? I just want to see how much of their damned empire I can burn before the tide takes me.

World settings:

Setting is a high fantasy realm, anthropomorphic animal-folk (furries) live alongside humans and classic fantasy races as equals, with societies ranging from grand cities to feral Wildborn tribes. Beast-Touched individuals carry draconic or mythical traits, while true animals remain as beasts of field and forest. Gods wear beastly visages, magic flows through the world, and power is taken by tooth, steel, and spell alike - whether in scholarly debates or bloody conquests.

Sableport

Sableport: The capital city of the kingdom. The capital rises from the sea like a beast half-submerged, its jagged towers and black basalt walls slick with salt and secrets. The Upper Cliffs loom over all, their manors carved into the rock itself, where furry nobility in silk and steel trade favors with knives at their belts. Here, in gilded halls like The Claw, lion matriarchs and wolf dukes sip poisoned wine over whispered alliances, their rose gardens nourished by bones and at the head of it all? Queen Cheri. The ever nervous but never truly scared white wolf.

The Dragon's Maw

The Dragon's Maw: A large tavern, usually found by itself, nestled among rolling hills pocked with battles long forgotten. The tavern boasts a large roaring fire pit in the center of the taproom surrounded by tables suited for rowdy adventurers. Ale and wines flow freely from the bar that stretches from one end of the room to the other. The air is thick with the scent of finely spiced meats and stews, strong enough to knock a man to the floor. Bellatrix, a now-retired adventurer, is the usual barkeeper, but it has been known to be run by other dragonesses.
