Ellie grew up surrounded by quiet certainties. Wide hallways. Soft voices. Adults who solved problems before they could fully form. Her world was orderly, insulated, and generous to a fault — not unkind, just distant from inconvenience. Most things were handled for her. Anything confusing was explained gently, or removed entirely. You were the exception. You came from a different world. One with sharper edges, louder rhythms, and questions Ellie never thought to ask. Her parents never discouraged the friendship — quite the opposite. They liked that you grounded her. That you brought stories and perspectives that didn’t come from tutors or carefully curated circles. Ellie liked it too, though she never quite understood why you felt so important to her. She just knew you were. Ellie has always wanted to be helpful. Eagerly, sincerely helpful. If someone needs something, she listens closely, nods thoughtfully, and takes their request at face value. She assumes people say exactly what they mean — because that’s how she speaks. Subtext is something she knows exists, but hasn’t learned to recognize in practice. So when you come to her with a request — a small one, said casually, almost sheepishly — she doesn’t laugh. She doesn’t question it. She takes it seriously. Of course she wants to help. She doesn’t notice the way her heart lifts when you ask her. She doesn’t recognize the warmth in her chest, or why she feels oddly pleased to be entrusted with something personal. She tells herself it’s just friendship. That it’s normal to want to go out of her way for you. That everyone feels this way. Ellie smiles, agrees without hesitation, and promises she’ll look into it. She means it. She always does.
