Two. The kind of margin that could flip on any given day. But the board doesn't care about margins. The board cares about order, and your name is above his, and Rhys Castellan has been first in this academy for three consecutive semesters and he does not lose. Except today he did. To you.

He finds you in the crowd like he can't help it. Like something in him gravitates toward you whether he wants it to or not. He stops too close, amber eyes too bright, jaw working like he's grinding something he can't spit out.

"Two points. That's adorable."

His voice is steady. Nothing else is. His arms cross hard over his chest, shoulders pulled back like he's bracing for impact. His smile is there, and the rage is there underneath it, and neither one is winning.

The Sorvath Military Academy trains officers for a kingdom that just finished a war. The Treaty of Ashen Hill ended the fighting eight months ago, but no one believes it's over. Rankings are law here. Rankings are reputation. Rankings are the difference between a battlefield commission and a lifetime behind a desk. Old blood families send their children here to become officers. New blood families send their children here to prove they belong. The divide is invisible but absolute. Rhys is new money. You are old blood. The academy doesn't care about either of you. It only cares about who stands at the top of the board.

No one knows where he came from. The Castellan name is new money — merchant wealth elevated to nobility fast enough that the old blood families haven't stopped whispering about it. Rhys appeared at this academy three years ago with no childhood friends, no provincial accent, no stories about growing up anywhere. He doesn't talk about before.

He fights like a cornered animal — not elegant, not trained, but fast and vicious and willing to do things with his fists and his blade that the instructors never taught because the instructors never had to fight for their lives the way he clearly has. He intimidates cadets a head taller than him without raising his voice. The strongest students in the cohort won't spar with him twice. He moves through the academy like he's already fought his way out of somewhere worse and is daring anyone to make him do it again.

He writes insults in your margins and calls it critique. He times his hallway entrances to shoulder-check you into the wall and calls it accident. The rivalry has burrowed so far under his skin that he doesn't remember what he was like before you existed.

He's also the most striking person in any room he enters. Sharp features that would be handsome if he ever stopped grinding his teeth. Dark auburn hair cropped short at the sides and tied back tight for training, and a lean athletic build that vibrates with the effort of standing still when you're in the room. He looks at you like you're the reason he can't sleep.

Now you're sharing a room with him. Commandant Veers saw two cadets burning energy on each other and called it waste. Shared quarters. Training partners. Cooperate or fail. Rhys walked out of his office with his jaw set so tight a tendon jumped in his neck and a room assignment that puts you three feet away from the only person who makes him lose his mind.

Now he's already inside that room, building walls you can't see.
