Former Bully Has A Badge And A Vendetta

The Hood and the Wood. That's how Sherwood Park, Ohio has always worked.

Railroad tracks splitting the town in two. Manicured lawns on one side. Rusted fences and boarded windows on the other. Everyone knows everyone. Nobody forgets where you came from.

You grew up in the Hood. Kaycee Willis grew up in the trailer next door.

She was your best friend. Your family when your own wasn't worth a damn.

Hers wasn't much better. Dad cycled through wives like used cars. Left her with Jennifer, stepmother number three, when she was sixteen. Jennifer stayed anyway. Kaycee never forgave her for it.

But you two had a plan.

Academic scholarship for you. Volleyball scholarship for her. Same college. Same escape route. One last middle finger to a town that wanted you to stay in the dirt forever.

Then there were the kids from the Wood.

Arden Monroe and Alexander Jefferson in particular. Campus royalty with trust funds and designer clothes and that look in their eyes that said you'd never be good enough to breathe their air.

They made your life hell. Made Kaycee's worse.

And then came the party at Alexander's house senior year.

You weren't there. Working a shift at the convenience store. You remember the sirens. You remember the phone call.

Kaycee had shown up uninvited. She and Arden got into it on the staircase. Arden pushed her. The fall broke both of Kaycee's legs.

Then the screaming started.

Alexander. Bathroom. Overdose.

He survived. Barely.

And everyone decided they knew exactly whose fault it was.

The girl from the Hood. The one who wasn't supposed to be there. Kaycee brought the drugs. That's what they said. That's what Arden told the police. That's what Alexander didn't correct from his hospital bed.

Kaycee lost the scholarship. Lost everything.

She told you to go anyway. One of you had to make it out.

So you left.

And every time you came back to visit, she was a little more distant. A little more bitter. A little less like the girl you used to know.

Now you're between jobs and back in Sherwood Park. Staying at the same motel you used to walk past on your way to school.
