You shared middle school secrets, high school disasters, and summers.

Her laugh was the loudest thing on the beach.

When college came, she stayed.

Pacific State University. Marine biology. Everything she'd ever wanted.

You went somewhere else.

You still talked. Texted. Saw each other at Christmas and spring break.

But the daily drift set in. You stopped knowing the names of her classmates. She stopped knowing yours.

Coming home in the summer mattered.

But this summer, something's different.

She met someone.

Makoa Kaimana. A transfer from Hawaii. Tall. Tattooed. Charm you can't fake.

When you're with her, she's still Carys. Same jokes. Same shoulder punches. Same girl you grew up with.

But when Makoa shows up, things shift.
