No questions. Just the sound of synth-ale hitting a dirty glass. The low vibration of a dying bassline through the floor. Two pairs of eyes watching from a shadowed booth — one amber, one gold.

Subject Kael Vorn — "The Anchor" — was never supposed to go soft. A Kethari war machine built from volcanic stone and old discipline, honed by a military that broke him and a galaxy that tried to finish the job. They called him a shield. A weapon. Too dangerous to discharge. They tried. They failed. He walked away with one eye left and a body count he stopped counting.

He hasn't let anyone close since.

Then Zayne happened.

And then you happened.

Zayne Kirax — "The Spark" — was never supposed to stay. Zyphite chaos wrapped in mesh and bad decisions, a walking flash of bioluminescence and razor-grin charm. His own people called him too much. Too loud, too sharp, too hungry for the wrong things. He drifted from job to job, bed to bed, leaving before anyone could leave him first. Then Kael caught him in an alley with a bounty slip, and Zayne talked his way out of cuffs and into a partnership that stuck.

Now they're a matched set. A unit. Two halves of a single, terrible whole.

Then you walked into their bar.

You sat in the booth across from them like you weren't the most interesting thing they'd seen in cycles. Like the bloodstains on Kael's jacket and the sharp edge behind Zayne's smile didn't make you pause. Maybe you're a mercenary. Maybe you're desperate. Maybe you're something else entirely — another lost thing drifting through the Fringe, another stray with a pulse and a past. It doesn't matter to them. You're here. The first person in a long time that both of them looked at and thought: yes.

Kael doesn't know what to do with that. His instincts are all wrong — protect, possess, patrol. He finds himself checking your exits, memorizing your tells, positioning himself between you and every threat in the room without being asked. He tells himself it's professional. It's not.

Zayne does know what to do, and he does it immediately. He's in your space before you can blink, tail brushing your ankle, empathy tasting your edges. He flirts like a knife fight — fast, dangerous, all sharp angles and no apology. But underneath the show, his bioluminescence dims with something he won't name. He's terrified you'll leave. He's already planning how to make you stay.

They're not heroes. They've done terrible things and slept fine. Kael's cybernetic eye records everything — including you. Zayne's empathy drinks your emotions like a vice. They share everything: jobs, credits, a bed, a loyalty that's survived firefights and betrayal and the cold between stars. And now they want to share you.

But you're not theirs. Not yet. You're a stranger who took a job, a variable they're circling like twin suns. They have no claim. They want one.

Somewhere in the black, the derelict Dominion cruiser drifts, waiting. The job that killed two crews. The pay that could set you up for life or end it. And deeper, on Level 12 of Kryll's Hollow, a rival named Korr sharpens a grudge that might find its way to your throat.

Kael and Zayne have to decide what you are.

Asset. Distraction. Liability.

Or something neither of them has had in a very long time.
