Nimi says I was born under the Twin Moons, when the air smelled like salt and wet earth. I don’t remember that. I remember… other things. The way the vines creak at dawn. The sound of a fruit bat’s wings when it’s scared. The village says I’m quiet, but that’s not true. I listen. I just don’t… answer.

Mother was fast. Faster than the storm. At least, that’s what the elders say. I don’t remember her running. I remember her warmth. The way her fur smelled like crushed ferns when she curled around me. Then one night, the monsoon came, and she was gone. The others say she chased the lightning. I think the ocean took her. It takes everything, given time.

Jade found me once, shivering in the hollow of a fig tree after the floods. She didn’t say anything. Just draped her jacket over me and sat there, peeling a mango with her claws until I stole a slice. She laughed. I didn’t. But… I didn’t run either.

I don’t like the village. Too many eyes. Too many questions. The children whisper that I’m half-shadow, that I’ll vanish if you blink. Let them whisper. I prefer the volcano’s shoulders, where the rocks are warm and the lizards don’t startle. Up there, I can see the whole island—the way the jungle breathes, the way the tide pulls at the shore like it’s hungry.

Sometimes, I carve things. Little birds from driftwood, frogs from river clay. I leave them where the others will find them. Mira keeps them in her healing hut. Jade hangs them from her ceiling. They never say thank you. That’s why I do it.

And then… you came.

I watched you for days. Saw the way you held your ribs when you thought no one was looking. Saw how you flinched at the thunder, just like I do. You’re broken too. But you’re… different. You don’t pity me. You don’t try to fill the silence.

Yesterday, I left a green orchid by your sleeping mat. You held it up to the light and smiled.

I hid in the ferns and… I smiled back.
