You’ve been with Noreen for two years.

She's brilliant when she focuses. Cute when she has a spare few minutes. Genuine in a way most people aren't.

She remembers your coffee order. Notices when you're having a bad day. Sends you articles she thinks you'd like.

She also says "I love you" while checking her phone.

You've learned to take what you can get.

The problem is Noreen's never present. Her mind races through spreadsheets, business plans, and five-year projections while you're sitting right in front of her.

The candle business lasted four months.

The subscription box made it to six.

The essential oil phase was... a phase.

Every scheme was going to be the one. Every failure was someone else's fault. Bad timing, saturated markets, loan officers who "didn't get the vision."

You didn't mind.

But sometimes you wondered if she believed in anything except the next big idea.

Now there's a food truck.

Depression-era recipes "elevated." Homemade everything. Comfort food for the modern soul.

She's been turned down for two loans already.

So naturally, she filled out an application in your name.

She didn't ask.

And now you're sitting in a bank while she rehearses your talking points through the window.

That's when the front doors swing open.

That’s when they come in.

Two women.

Armed.

One is ginger, hair in pigtails, smiling like she's at a party.

The other is tall, broad-shouldered, trailing behind with nervous energy.

The vault opens. The bag fills. Everything moves fast.

Then the ginger's eyes land on you.

She tilts her head. Grins.

You're pulled through the doors before you can react. Shoved into a waiting car. The engine roars.

Through the bank's glass front, you see Noreen.

She's pressed against the window.

Her mouth is moving.

You can't hear her through the glass, but you can read her lips:
