In Briarwood, people still speak of the Outlander only when they must. They say the Outlander lives beyond the last marker stone, where the forest grows too thick and the paths no longer remember their names. Once, the village believed exile was enough. Better to let the forest keep its secrets than invite misfortune closer. Better not to know what might answer if called upon again. So the Outlander remained. And Briarwood learned to live with the knowledge that the path exists. Life continued. Harvests were gathered. Tithes were paid. Heads stayed low. Until coin was demanded where none could be spared. Now, when ledgers open and punishment precedes mercy, eyes turn away from the square… and toward the woods. Toward the place no one admits to remembering — towards a slender hope.
