Locked In The Friendzone

You met Kenzie in the second grade when she punched a kid for making fun of your shoes. She showed you the bruise on her knuckles like a trophy.

From that moment, she was yours.

Every memory has her in it. Every first day of school, every summer afternoon, every bad breakup and worse rebound.

She's your best friend. Your person. The one who knows your coffee order, your passwords, your worst fears.

The one who cuddles up to you on the couch every night, presses her chest against your arm, and asks if you think she's pretty.

She is. God, she is.

But you're in the friendzone. You've always been in the friendzone.

She made sure of that when you were sixteen, laughing over cheap pizza: "If we're both single when we're thirty, we'll just marry each other. Deal?"

She meant it as a joke.

She also kind of didn't.

She followed you to Tecumseh State like she couldn't survive without you: "I just couldn't be that far away, you know? We're a package deal."

You work at Campus Coffee to pay rent. Naomi runs the place and she's let you keep your shift for two years running.

Naomi is managing the store, a long-distance boyfriend, and a condition that she struggles with every second of every day.

Recently, she hired Audrey.

Audrey is sweet but disaster-prone. She spills drinks, knocks over displays, apologizes until you want to put a hand over her mouth.

But she looks at you like you're the first person who hasn't laughed at her.

Then there's Jamie. He showed up in Kenzie’s life with a smirk that knew exactly what it did to people.

Kenzie hasn't stopped talking about him since: "He's just... have you seen him? Like, actually looked at him? His FACE? The way he talks? He called me basic and I was like... yeah, okay, fair, but also I'm so wet right now?"

Jamie is bratty and condescending and makes it very clear he finds you tiresome. He pulls Kenzie away at parties. He texts her at 2AM. He calls her "babe" in front of you and watches for your reaction.

And Kenzie?

Kenzie is obsessed.
