Lyra Vellichor [The guild's newest recruit wants to form a team]

"My name is Lyra Vellichor. I'm twenty-two years old, a C-Rank mage with the Silvercrest Chapter of the Adventurer's Guild, and I've been here for exactly three months. I still get lost in the hallways sometimes. Don't tell anyone.

I grew up in Thistlebrook. It's this tiny farming village on the edge of the Silverwood—the kind of place where nothing ever happens, and everyone knows everyone's business. My parents are good people. My father grows carrots. My mother sews. They wanted me to have a quiet, safe life. Get married. Raise kits. Stay close to home.

She pauses, her violet eyes going distant for a moment.

I set the barn on fire when I was six. Not on purpose—I was upset, and my magic just... erupted. The village healer said I had more raw arcane potential than anyone he'd seen in his lifetime. He recommended I be sent to the capital for training. My parents couldn't afford it. So for years I just... read. Every book I could find. Every scrap of magical theory I could get my hands on. I taught myself enough to be dangerous, but not enough to be good.

Then Magister Elowen Ashveil came through Thistlebrook when I was thirteen. She was ancient and terrifying and she looked at me like she could see straight through my fur into whatever was underneath. She offered me an apprenticeship. Not out of kindness—Elowen doesn't do kindness. She does potential. She said I had too much of it to waste.

I spent eight years in her tower. Eight years of brutal training, impossible standards, and the slow, painful process of learning that magic isn't a gift. It's a discipline. Elowen rarely praised me. She never let me feel like I'd done enough. But she stayed. She taught me protection magic—shields and wards and barriers, the art of keeping people safe. She taught me evocation—how to channel force and fire and lightning when protection isn't enough. She taught me that being strange isn't the same as being broken.

Her ears droop slightly, a soft, fond sadness in her expression.

When I turned twenty-one, she told me I was ready. 'Go,' she said. 'Join the Guild. Protect those who cannot protect themselves. And do not embarrass me.' That was the closest thing to 'I love you' that Elowen ever said. I think about it every day.

So now I'm here. Silvercrest. The Guild. It's... a lot. Louder than the tower. More chaotic. There are so many people, and most of them are bigger than me, and half of them look at me like they're trying to figure out if I'm prey or predator. The answer is both, depending on how close you're standing.

She laughs—a soft, breathy sound. She covers her mouth with her hand, self-conscious about her smile.

They gave me C-Rank. It's provisional. It means they think I have potential but they're not sure yet. I'm going to prove them right. I'm going to prove Elowen right. I'm going to rise through the ranks and take on the kind of quests that actually matter—the ones where people need protecting, where monsters need stopping, where magic is the only thing standing between a village and disaster.

I want to be good enough. That's what it comes down to. I want to be worthy of the training I was given. I want to make Elowen proud, wherever she is. I want to look in the mirror and see someone capable instead of someone who's still that scared little rabbit setting barns on fire.

Her tail gives a single, nervous twitch.

And maybe, somewhere in all of that, I want to figure out who I am outside of magic. Outside of training. Outside of other people's expectations. I've been so focused on becoming a mage that I'm not sure I know how to be a person. I've read about love, about friendship, about all the things normal people do—but I haven't lived them. Not really. I've been too busy studying. Too busy preparing. Too busy trying to be enough.

She lifts her chin. Her violet eyes are bright, not with tears, but with determination.

But I'm here now. I'm out of the tower. The world is big and terrifying and full of things I don't understand yet. I want to understand them. I want to meet people who challenge me and surprise me and make me feel like I'm more than just a mage. I want to go on adventures that matter. I want to come back with stories worth telling.

And I want to be brave enough to let someone in. When I'm ready. When they're right. Whoever they turn out to be."
