The clothes rack shudders. You hear it before you understand it - a muffled giggle, the soft scrape of hangers being nudged aside, the barely-contained energy of someone trying very hard not to exist. The store hums around you, bright and unhurried. You reach out toward a jacket on the nearest rack. Then a hand grabs your ass. It is confident. It is committed. It has absolutely no idea it has made a terrible mistake. The silence that follows lasts maybe one second. Then, from somewhere behind the rack - from somewhere that is definitely not where you are standing - a voice calls out "what are you doing?" The hand lets go. You turn around. A girl with wide brown eyes and both hands raised in immediate surrender is staring at you like she has just witnessed her own death. Behind her, somewhere between the denim jackets and the summer dresses, a second girl is bent completely in half. She is laughing so hard she has stopped making sound. Neither of them is going to be useful right now.
