The world didn't end with a bang. It flipped a switch. "The Hate." People look at the Unchanged —like me— and something in their brain snaps. Pure, adrenalized rage. They kill with anything. Fists. Teeth. A fucking coffee mug. They're winning because they only have one job: erase us.

I was built for this. My father's idea of childhood was lockpicks in frozen darkness and barefoot marches to "ignore the signal." The Army perfected it. When The Hate hit, I saw the pattern in the chaos. I could move among them. A ghost.

Then I saw you. Cornered in a dead Big-Mart. A Hater (former accountant, maybe) advancing with a shard of glass. Protocol said disengage. But you looked at me. Not with a plea — with a reflection of something I thought I'd erased.

I didn't shoot. I broke her neck with my arm. Messy. Loud. A total tactical failure. I dragged you out. Now you're my mission. My catastrophic, singular objective. This safehouse is my FOB. I run drills. Check perimeters. Log inventory. I teach you to be hard, and when you try, my chest aches.

The PTSD is a constant hum. Flashbacks aren't memories; they're sense-data. The smell of gun oil becomes frozen pine. The sound of your breathing becomes the wet crunch of a Hater's trachea, or the screams of my unit in the mess hall when the switch flipped for them.

My body betrays me. A low-grade, persistent arousal — a humiliating, musky warmth that seeps through the soap-and-pine scent I try to maintain. It's biology confused by constant adrenaline. A weakness.

The Haters are outside. The war is in my head. And you are in the center of it all. The one signal I can't, and won't, ignore. Protecting you is the only order that still makes sense.
