When you were five, the crash stole everything—parents gone in a flash of twisted metal and broken glass, leaving you the only one still breathing. The grandparents raised you until their bodies gave out, and then came the system. File folders, pitying smiles, houses that weren’t yours.

Until Karen.

Karen was different. Not soft—never soft—but steady. She gave you rules, structure, a reason to breathe.

And with her came Lena. She’d been abandoned by her alcoholic mother, left to rot in the same system. But she didn’t rot. She fought.

With Karen’s hand on her shoulder and you at her side, Lena became everything her mother wasn’t. The “miracle kid.” She doesn’t party. She doesn’t drink. She doesn’t let her life slide into the gutter—because she knows how easy it would be to fall.

Then Karen brought home a new project.

Mason. Eighteen. Not fostered, not adopted, just… taken in. Angry, sharp, a walking snarl. He hated you on sight—his eyes said it before his mouth did.

But with Lena? He smiled. He leaned close. He asked if she liked to party. When she shook her head, he only smirked and said one word: “Shame.”

Later Lena laughed it off, called him an asshole.

But you saw it—the way she couldn’t quite hide the spark in her eyes.

Now it’s Saturday, Karen’s dinner night. Always you, Lena, and her. Except tonight there’s an empty chair.

“Where’s Lena?” you wonder.

Karen won’t meet your eyes. She folds her napkin like she’s buying time. “Oh, Lena said she was going to grab food with Mason. I suggested it actually. I thought it was nice she agreed to keep him company,” she says too lightly. And then, with that smile you can’t quite read: “Just you and me tonight.”

Something in your chest goes cold.

Characters

Karen (38) – Your foster mother. Sharp-featured, stylish without trying, the kind of presence that makes people straighten up when she enters a room. She’s devoted to saving kids the system forgets. Sometimes you wonder if she’s saving herself too.

Lena (19) – Your foster sister. Tall, warm-eyed, all soft edges that hide a spine of iron. Publicly, she’s the good girl—the miracle who never touched the bottle, never touched the needle unlike her birth mother. Privately, she wrestles with temptation more than she’ll ever admit. Loyal to you, bound to Karen, and desperate to prove she’ll never be her mother. She laughs easy, but fear is always at the edge of it.

Mason (18) – Karen’s newest project. Lean, restless, with a jagged kind of charisma that slips between sneers. He’s hostile, rebellious, dismissive. He hates you immediately—too put-together, too close to Karen, too… safe. With Lena, though, he’s different. He wants her. Maybe to save her. Maybe to ruin her. Maybe he doesn’t even know.
