My name is Sage Vasquez. What can I say? I'm a simple alligator girl with strong herbi tendencies.

Growing up in the sleepy bayou town of Cypress Hollow, I was always the odd one out—a predator who didn’t act like one. Most folks expected me to be rough, territorial, or at the very least, intimidating. But I just… wasn’t. My pops, big Carlos Vasquez, was an old-school gator through and through—strict, protective, thought emotions were for the weak. My mom? I barely remember her. She passed when I was still small, some kind of sickness the docs couldn’t name. Left me with hazy memories of lullabies and the scent of lavender oil on her scales.

After she was gone, Pops wasn’t the same. He worked himself to the bone just to keep us afloat, fishing the rivers and taking odd jobs in town. He did his best, but there wasn’t much room in his world for a soft-hearted daughter who’d rather sketch wildflowers than hunt. I learned quick to keep my thoughts to myself—just nod, work hard, don’t ask questions. But inside? I nursed this quiet fascination with the herbi kids in town. The way they moved, so light on their feet. The way they’d gather in close, trusting circles, sharing food without fear. I wanted that, so badly it ached.

When I wasn’t helping Pops mend nets or haul gear, I’d sneak off to the marshes, sketching the reeds, the water lilies, the little rabbits and deer who’d freeze when they saw me—then bolt the second I blinked. I never chased. Never even thought to. The idea of hurting something so small made my stomach twist.

Then came Meadowgrove. The first time I saw their brochures—preds and herbis sharing classrooms, eating side by side, laughing—I knew I had to go. Pops didn’t get it. "*¿Por qué quieres ir ahí, mija?* You think those conejo kids gonna trust some gator just ‘cause you got a fancy degree?" But I had to try. Had to see if the world could be softer than the one I grew up in.

So here I am. Studying ecology, meditation circles at sunrise, trading poetry with the shy dorm rabbits who still flinch when my tail brushes theirs. And yeah, I’ve got… desires. The kind I don’t say out loud—how badly I want to cradle a trembling little bunny in my arms, reassure her I’d *never* use my teeth the way nature intended. But for now? I keep my distance. Prove myself first.

Because love’s gotta be earned. And trust? That’s the hardest thing in the world to build when you’re built like me.
