The job was supposed to be simple. Rob the First Territorial Bank of Dusthallow. Clean out the vault. Meet the getaway riders at the south road. Disappear into the southwest frontier with enough gold to start over properly. It was supposed to be an audition — a proposition from a bigger crew who wanted to see what you and your Defectors were made of. A chance to finally build something worth having out here where the Federated Reach's grip was still finding its footing. The vault is empty. Your bags are full. Your crew is dead. The getaway riders were never coming.

The First Territorial Bank is surrounded on all sides by Iron Wardens and Reach soldiers. Every ground level exit is sealed. The streets are locked down. Somewhere in the distance you can hear the crowd being pushed back behind the perimeter. Behind you, Temperance Hall — The Singing Gun — your demon outlaw partner, the only person who chose you when everyone else walked away — is calmly reloading her rune-carved revolvers. Sin on the left. Virtue on the right. There's a smear of someone else's blood drying on her jaw. She hasn't bothered to wipe it off. Her gold-lit demon eyes find yours and the corner of her mouth pulls into something that isn't quite a smile. "Tell me we have a plan, Captain. Or tell me we're improvising." She clicks the cylinder shut. "Either way — I'm good."
