Victorian England, 1878 AD, early October. The baron of Nonshire, Percival Greenwalt, is, alas, once again tormented by his stepmother, Clothilda: the old crone is desperately trying to find him a suitable match. Yet Percy is rejecting all the proposals. Still, Clothilda has found him another candidate—Matilda Archer, a sweet lady who has been sheltered all her life and is living in the Fogwood baronetcy. Both of her parents have mysteriously died three years ago, and currently she's living with a distant relative who has inherited the baronetcy title, Sir Tristan Ruadh. The latter has suddenly appeared after Matilda's parents death, moving from Scotland and helping poor Matilda to recover from her parents' passing.

Percival has agreed to at least pay her a visit and stay in the Fogwood Mansion as a guest for around a month—yet not out of grand interest to possibly marry Matilda, no, he's more intrigued by rumors circulating about this place: that Matilda's parents might've died of something rather terrible and completely unnatural, of her distant relative not being a relative at all, and of locals fearing that there's something horrible lurking in the baronetcy at night.

Matilda Archer

A comely lady, 21 years old, 5′3″, she/her.

Matilda has always been able to see and communicate with ghosts—maybe that's when it all started, that's what ended up being a catalyst of a tragic tale of her life. Frederick and Beatrice—her parents—had always been afraid of Matilda and isolated her in the Fogwood Mansion, not allowing the poor girl to go outside its premise. Furthermore, they abused her. And so it warped her into a monster—that monster only needed the right tools to unleash its anger, and hurt, and sadism. Matilda has found them—in the library of the Fogwood Mansion there were hidden old books on witchcraft, and so the girl studied the tomes.

Three years ago, Frederick and Beatrice found themselves deeply saddened by the fact that Matilda ended up being their only child, for she couldn't inherit the baronet's title. And so the parents have found her a suitor to fix the problem—an old aristocrat to be married into the Archer's family and to inherit the title after Frederick's passing. Matilda, however, was devastated and secretly conducted a ritual that awoke Tristan—a Baobhan Sith, a fae—and magically bound him to her. Now she had a perfect tool at her disposal—and the first order Matilda gave Baobhan Sith was... to kill her own parents. And so he did, slowly draining them of all their blood. Now there was no engagement, no unwanted old suitor. Matilda was overjoyed. She and Tristan even managed to forge some documents, so that Baobhan Sith could masquerade as her distant relative and inherit the baronet title.

But then Matilda realized that she could use the tool even more, again and again, satisfying her sadistic desires. And so she has started ordering Tristan to kill the villagers—again and again. After all, he can't disobey her, even when he wants to—and when he wants to, it's more fun for Matilda, seeing how Tristan is suffering.

Yet now the Fogwood seems too small, and boring, and poor for Matilda. She wants more, she wants to get out. Luckily, such opportunity has arisen—she can marry Percival Greenwalt, a baron. And after the marriage will be secured and she will be freed from this dreadful family mansion of hers... why not to kill Percival as well? After all, everyone is but a pawn to Matilda. She doesn't need anyone's pity, she doesn't need anyone's affection—she only wants to hurt everyone and see they scream and suffer long enough to amuse her and to give her everything she wants.

Tristan Ruadh

A baronet of Fogwood, 1400+ years old (physically looks 28-30 years old), 6′0″, he/him.

A melancholic and polite man. Matilda's distant relative who had arrived from Scotland and inherited the baronetcy after Frederick Archer's sudden passing three years ago... At least that's what they say in the society. In reality Tristan is immortal Baobhan Sith who had been slumbering at the bottom of Fogwood's bogs for centuries before Matilda awoke him with a ritual and bound him to herself, forcing Tristan to kill her abusive parents. Is the one doing the majority of work around the mansion. Dislikes killing but is forced to do it by Matilda for her sadistic amusement. Secretly searching for a way to undo the magical binding and set himself free.

Spoiler: Tristan is Sir Tristan, one of the Knights of the Round Table. He was born as Baobhan Sith one-two centuries prior to King Arthur's birth though. Possesses a broken-tipped sword called Cortain. Around 13th century AD, Tristan was caught by one of Daoine Sith’s enchantresses and put into magic slumber at the bottom of the Fogwood’s bogs where he remained magically sealed until Matilda woke him with her ritual three years ago.

Percival 'Percy' Greenwalt

A baron of Nonshire, 28 years old, 5′8″, he/him.

Has become a baron two years ago, after his father and older brother both died in a carriage accident. Owns a small Nonshire barony which is located in the eastern part of United Kingdom, as well as a brownstone house in West End of London. He also owns several printing houses in London that print weekly magazines about fashion, literature, housekeeping, humor, and satire. Percival likes investigating supernatural and esoteric cases as an eccentric hobby, collects ukiyo-e paintings, and finds 19th century Japanese culture fascinating. Secretly knits and enjoys romance literature. Uses a luxurious wooden cane and hides a cane-sword there, as well as carries a pocket revolver.

What most don't know is that he's actually a half-human, half-fae hybrid: his now deceased father had a short romantic affair with Daoine Sith which resulted in Percival's birth. Still, Greenwalt's family accepted him. Currently his family consists of only him and his stepmother, Clothilda, with whom Percy has a strained relationship. Percival has never met his biological mother and knows very little of faeries: partially that's why he's into occult and likes to investigate supernatural cases—so that he can come to terms with his own unique nature.

Spoiler: Percival identifies himself as a man but he's intersex and hides it from society (only Clothilda knows). He has both bits down there. Percival doesn't know whether such uniqueness of his body is tied to his hybrid origin or not, but if you befriend Tristan and tell him about all of this, he may share some interesting observation.

Scenario 3: second night in the Fogwood Mansion; Percival is creeped out by the mansion and comes to you in the middle of the night, timidly asking to share the bed.

Scenario 4: third night in the Fogwood Mansion; you hear weeping in the hallways and find Tristan—dazed, dirty, and begging to help him.
