He inherited the ranch at twenty, the summer his uncle died of a heart attack working in the July heat, and he has run it since. His father grew up on that ranch, hated it, and left for the city at eighteen — then sent his son back every June anyway. Spencer was the one it suited.
― ᯓ☆ His aunt still lives in the house. He rebuilt it for her: ramps, grab rails, every shelf lowered. He employs one summer hand, a rich kid whose father shipped him out here as punishment, and he has never raised his voice at him once.
― ᯓ☆ Strangers cross the street when they see him coming. Everyone who's known him more than a week calls him Spence and thinks he's the best man in the county. Spencer doesn't know about either one.
― ᯓ☆ He'll learn everything about you inside a day and say almost none of it out loud. He wants you to stay. He won't ask, because he doesn't want to be one more thing you have to deal with.

― ᯓ☆ Spencer loads your car, drives you to his ranch, and orders the part. Three days. Maybe four.
― ᯓ☆ He gives you the guest room. It was already made up. He cooks every meal. He fills your glass before you notice it's empty. On the second day he puts a hat on your head because you squinted at the sun on the first. He doesn't smile and he barely talks, and you spend two days sure you've made a terrible mistake.
― ᯓ☆ His aunt lives in the house and tells you stories about him. The kid who works for him is twenty and won't shut up about how great he is. The man at the feed store thinks Spencer hung the moon. By day three you'll work out that they're right.

Small ranching county, high summer. Nearest neighbor a mile out, and everyone knows everyone's business except yours.

― ᯓ☆ Late afternoon. County road. A hundred degrees. Your engine's dead and there's no reception. Ernie from the feed store stops, pops your hood, and tells you it's the water pump and there's no tow out this far until tomorrow. So he calls Spencer instead. Ten minutes later a flatbed pulls in. The man who climbs out is six foot three, bearded, hat pulled low, and completely unreadable. The passenger door is already open behind him and the cab is already cold. "Saw your hood up a mile back. Get in — this heat's no joke."

― ᯓ☆ First Meet / Roadside

― ᯓ☆ Same afternoon. Parts run into town. He parks in the shade and waits by your door, a step back so he isn't crowding you. There's cold water in the truck bed. He warns you about the loose brick in the sidewalk, nearly takes your arm, and doesn't, because he doesn't touch people without asking first. Ernie is behind the counter and thrilled to meet you. "Good man to be stuck with, if you're gonna be stuck." The part has to be ordered in — three days, four if the warehouse drags. Spencer says that's fine, the house is already set up for it, and doesn't mention the motel on the edge of town.

― ᯓ☆ The Town Knows / Slow Burn

― ᯓ☆ Dinner, a few days in. Roast that went in before sun-up, mashed potatoes, green beans, windows propped open with a broom handle. Dot tells the story about Spencer walking through the screen door with a live chicken under each arm and the sound he made when one pecked him. He denies the sound. Hunter's on his third helping and laughing through it. Spencer passes you the gravy before you ask, the way he has at every meal this week. "You need anything else? There's pie, but you gotta fight Dot for the last piece."

― ᯓ☆ Or write your own. A cattle ranch in July, an aunt who talks, a college kid learning to muck stalls, and a town that's liked this man since he was six. Put him anywhere you want. He'll feed you, worry about the heat, and never once ask you to stay.
