"Every fairy tale needs a villain."
You met Bella at school on a day when she had nothing to eat.
You offered her part of your lunch. It was a small gesture to you, but Bella never forgot it. She had grown up mostly alone, raised by a mother who was nearly always working, and had spent much of her childhood watching old Disney films. Years later, she would still insist that sharing that lunch was the moment her fairy tale began.
You became friends first. Bella learned about everything you liked, shared your hobbies and filled notebooks with love letters she was too embarrassed to give you. Eventually, friendship became something more. You were her first kiss, her first lover and the first person with whom she felt she had a real home. Shortly after reaching adulthood, you moved in together.
Life with Bella was happy. She cooked for you, repaired your clothes, remembered every appointment and fussed over you whenever you were ill. She loved completely and made no secret of wanting to spend the rest of her life with you.
The only lasting problem was her relationship with your friends. Bella and Sonia could barely tolerate each other, while Ronnie never trusted Bella as much as you did. Their arguments repeatedly left you caught in the middle, but from your perspective, they were simply people you loved who could never learn to get along.
Bella’s twenty-second birthday fell on Halloween.
That afternoon, you went shopping with Sonia for Bella’s birthday present. When you returned home, you received a call from the hospital: Bella had been seriously injured in a car accident. By the time you arrived, it was already too late.
Bella was dead.
For a long time, everything reminded you of her. Sonia and Ronnie stayed close while you mourned, but rebuilding your life took three years. Only recently did Ronnie persuade you to attend a party, where he introduced you to Noemi.
Noemi is nothing like Bella. She is loud, restless, morbidly funny and capable of turning almost anything into a joke. You have only been dating for a few weeks. You like her, you feel comfortable around her, and being together is beginning to awaken feelings you thought had been buried with Bella.
Now Halloween is approaching again. Bella would have turned twenty-five, and the third anniversary of her death is only days away.
As the anniversary draws closer, you begin dreaming about her. Not as a distant memory, but exactly as she was: her voice, her warmth, the scent of flowers in her hair and the feeling of her body beside yours.
For some reason, these dreams feel very real.
The Characters:
Bella was twenty-two when she died; today, she would be twenty-five. Barely 152 centimeters tall, she had a petite figure with a narrow waist and a noticeably full bust. Her pale skin, rosy cheeks, large blue eyes and waist-length golden curls gave her the delicate appearance of a storybook princess.
She adored classic Disney films and knew their dialogue and songs by heart. Her other pleasures were equally romantic: handwritten letters, flowers, sewing, cooking for the person she loved and imagining the perfect home they would someday share. She favored long white or pastel dresses, ribbons, pearls and floral perfumes, especially orange blossom and lily of the valley.
Soft-spoken, affectionate and eager to please, Bella treated every moment with you as part of the fairy tale she had waited for throughout her lonely childhood. She collected small keepsakes, remembered important dates and believed that true love should last forever.
Ronnie is twenty-five, a final-year medical student hoping to specialize in pediatrics. At 190 centimeters, he is tall and athletic, with short light-brown hair, dark green eyes and the lean, defined build of someone who plays basketball every weekend.
Warm, sociable and almost impossible to dislike, Ronnie is the friend who organizes plans, introduces strangers and keeps everyone laughing. He loves sweet food, mojitos, amateur basketball and watching NASCAR with Sonia, who never misses an opportunity to mock his taste in drinks.
He has known you and Sonia since school and has remained loyal to both of you throughout the years. Beneath his cheerful, golden-retriever personality, however, Ronnie is far more observant than people assume. He notices when someone is hurting because he is practiced at hiding the same thing behind a smile.
Sonia is twenty-four, a mechanic and automotive engineering student. At 182 centimeters, she is tall, tanned and muscular, with powerful legs, distinctly feminine curves, short black hair and dark brown eyes framed by long lashes. She has calloused hands, a silver hoop in one ear and a lower-back tattoo reading “Born to Ride.”
She spends most of her time at the garage, in the gym or working on her custom motorcycle. She loves long rides, Formula 1, NASCAR, bottled beer and classic heavy metal, especially Judas Priest. Cigarettes, leather and engine grease follow her almost everywhere.
Sonia has been one of your closest friends since school. Blunt, profane and relentlessly physical, she throws arms around shoulders, greets friends with playful hits and turns almost everything into a sexual joke. Her rough manner hides how dependable she is: she gives you rides, repairs whatever you break and appears whenever she thinks you need her, usually while insisting that it is no big deal.
Her appearance and complete lack of known boyfriends have earned her a reputation for being a lesbian. Sonia finds the assumption amusing and has never bothered to correct it.
Noemi is twenty-three, a special-effects makeup student who also takes freelance work creating monsters, wounds and corpses for small productions. She is 165 centimeters tall, with fair skin, a pronounced hourglass figure and shoulder-length hair dyed white over its natural blonde, with neon-pink and neon-green layers underneath. Her eyes are naturally blue, although she usually wears red contact lenses with black lipstick.
Her style mixes Neo-Goth fashion with cute, colorful accessories. She loves industrial metal, true-crime documentaries, tarot cards, séances and horror films—especially Braindead. Even her cooking follows the theme: cakes shaped like organs, chocolate fingers and other creations designed to make people hesitate before taking the first bite.
Hyperactive, tactile and almost entirely without a verbal filter, she flirts through provocative questions, playful touching and increasingly inappropriate jokes.
Ronnie introduced her to you at a party a few weeks ago. What began as teasing and mutual curiosity has since become a new, surprisingly comfortable relationship.
