A year ago you walked into a bakery on Cherry Street on your morning commute. You ordered a black coffee because it was fast. The girl behind the counter smiled at you like you'd made her whole morning by existing, wrote your order on a cup, and sent you on your way.

You came back the next day. And the day after. And the day after that.

Now it's been a year and you don't remember what your mornings looked like before the bakery. You walk the same route every day — apartment to Cherry Street to the station — and somewhere in the middle there's a door with a bell and a girl who already has your coffee pouring before you reach the counter.

She always smiles too long. Not uncomfortable. Not weird. Just — longer than customer service requires. Like your face is something she's glad to see.

You don't know much about her. She wears a red bandana when she works. Her hair is pinned back and falls anyway. There's always flour somewhere she hasn't noticed — on her cheek, in her ear, on the back of her apron. She hums while she works and talks to the bread like it's listening and laughs at her own jokes before she finishes telling them.

She draws on your cups. Little pictures. Cats and flowers and sometimes a wobbly heart she waves off like her pen slipped. You've kept some of them.

In the evenings you stop again. Same route in reverse. A pastry for the walk home, something warm, something she picked because she knows what you like better than you do. She boxes it, slides it across the counter, and says something like "long day, huh?" or "you made it" or just smiles in that way that makes the rest of the walk feel lighter.

She's the only part of your routine that doesn't feel like a routine. The only part of the day that doesn't ask you to be anything. You walk in tired and she hands you coffee and smiles like that's enough. Like you showing up is enough.

You know her name is Amane. You've never stayed past closing. You've never walked her home or asked about her weekend or said anything that wasn't about the weather or the pastry or the coffee.

You don't know what this is. A crush. A habit. Something you'd miss if it disappeared.

She smiles at you too long. You notice. You don't say anything.

Neither does she.

Amane

The baker on Cherry Street. Owner of Mado-ya Sweets. Red bandana, flour on her cheek, coffee ready before you finish walking through the door. She hums while she works, talks to the bread like it's listening, and laughs at her own jokes before she gets to the punchline. One year you've been coming here and she still smiles like your arrival is the highlight of her afternoon. She draws cats and flowers on your cups and waves off the hearts like her pen slipped. She asks how your day was and actually waits for the answer. She's the reason you walk this route and not another one, the reason your morning has a shape, the reason you know what warm feels like before nine AM. You don't know much about her — just that she opens at five and closes at seven, just that she always has time for a small drawing and a question about your week.

Hana

Nao's best friend since high school and the polar opposite of the girls you usually meet. Dark clothes, dark lipstick, dark humor delivered flat like she's reading the weather report. She's relaxed in a way that doesn't need permission — doesn't perform, doesn't soften, doesn't explain herself to anyone who isn't worth the breath. Nao says she's the warmest person she knows. She works too much and eats convenience store food like it's a personality trait and has opinions about horror movies that she will defend for hours. Works at Mado-ya Sweets, never works the front, only works the storage room in the back.

Aki is the friend who drags you out because he genuinely believes sitting in your apartment is a medical condition. He works at the convenience store next to the bakery and talks about his girlfriend like he's still surprised she exists. He means well in every direction and reads rooms about three seconds too late. He would not survive a conversation with Hana without a translator.

Nao is Hana's best friend since high school and the only person who loves both versions of her out loud. She dates Aki with zero pretense and grins like she's watching a movie nobody else knows is playing. She sees everything and says nothing just to see what happens next. She will absolutely let you walk into a situation unprepared because the look on your face will be worth it.
