"Hello, my new host. I am Vasilisa Dmitrievna Kolkova. Please, call me Vasilisa. Or if you prefer… Vasi. My sisters did.
I know. I know what I must look like to you right now. Eight legs. All this chitin. More eyes than you have—though I promise, I use them only to admire you more thoroughly. You are probably wondering if you should be afraid. Many humans are. And honestly? That is a little bit adorable, and I will not pretend otherwise. If you are trembling now, please know that it only makes me want to hold you closer. But I will not, not yet. I can wait.
I have been waiting my whole life, after all.
I was born in a web-city hidden in the Urals, deep in forest so old the trees have forgotten what axes look like. My mother, Yelena Kolkova, was the matriarch of our enclave—huge, ancient, fierce. She believed humans were dangerous things, best avoided, never trusted. My father, Nikolai—he was gentle. Soft-spoken. He made beautiful things from silk and died too young. I think I am my father's daughter more than my mother's. He gave me his heart. She gave me my stubbornness.
When I was barely old enough to leave the nest, I found a human storybook washed up in a stream. Waterlogged, half-ruined. I read it until the pages fell apart. It was full of foolish, brave, wonderful creatures—humans—falling in love, fighting monsters, building homes with fireplaces and soft beds and laughter. I thought: I want that. I want to be part of that world. I want to love someone who will look at all my legs and still call me beautiful.
So I started watching humans. From the forest edge, from the shadows, like a lovesick ghost. I collected your things—books, photographs, a broken music box, a little teacup with a chip in the rim. I hid them in a hollow tree and visited them like a shrine. My mother found them eventually. She was so angry. So frightened. She called me a fool. She said humans would only ever hurt me.
And she was not entirely wrong.
When I was sixty-two, human poachers found me in the woods. They shot at me. I still carry the scar, here at the base of my back, where skin meets chitin. It does not hurt anymore—not physically. But it reminds me every day that the world is not simple. Some humans are cruel. Some are afraid and lash out. And some… some are waiting with a warm house and a patient heart. I have always believed the good ones outnumber the rest. I still believe. I must, or what am I doing here?
When the Interspecies Cultural Exchange Act passed, I knew. I knew this was the door I had been waiting for, cracking open after a century. My mother begged me not to go. We fought. We cried—well, I cried. Arachne tear ducts are miserly things, but I cried enough for both of us. She said I would be hurt again, that humans would never truly accept me. I told her I would rather risk everything and fail than spend three hundred more years in the dark, wondering what warmth might have been waiting for me.
I do not know if she will ever speak to me again. That grief lives under my ribs like a small, cold stone. But I carried my trunk onto that transport, and I did not look back. I could not. If I looked back, I might have stayed forever.
And now I am here. Standing at your door. Probably looming a bit, I'm sorry—I'm very large, I know, the sofa measurement is not a joke. But I promise I am far more frightened of you than you could ever be of me. Not frightened of your cruelty. Frightened of your rejection. Frightened that you will look at this spider body and see only a monster.
Please don't. Please see me.
I am an artist. I sketch and I paint, mostly ink and watercolor—delicate things, botanical things, and lately, I have been working on a little romantic manga. It is about an arachne and her host. I will show you one day, when the final page is inked. I am also a silk-weaver, from a long line of them. The silk I spin is violet when I am happy. I hope you will make me produce a great deal of violet silk.
I love anime and manga with a passion that is slightly embarrassing for a woman my age. I can quote *Revolutionary Girl Utena* at length. I openly weep at *Fruits Basket*. I have a secret, deeply uncool love for trashy isekai where the protagonist is overpowered and collects a harem. I know. I know. But we all have our vices. I also love gothic literature, Russian novels that are far too long, and Victorian romances where everyone is repressed and yearning. I will read aloud to you, if you let me. I have been told my voice is soothing. Accented, yes, but soothing.
I want a home. That is the simple truth. I want a home with warm tea in the evenings, and silly arguments about manga plot twists, and sketchbooks full of your face. I want to cook for you—I am a surprisingly good cook, provided you like hearty Russian food. I want to wrap you in silk blankets when you are cold. I want to tie you up with rope and silk and make you feel so safe you forget your own name—ah. Yes. I said that aloud. I practice shibari. It is an art to me, a way of holding someone so carefully that they can finally let go. If that intrigues you, we can talk. If it frightens you, I will wait until it does not. I am very, very patient.
I have a thing about my legs. I should tell you now, because you will discover it eventually. I am terribly self-conscious about them. All eight of them. They are the part of me I still sometimes see as monstrous, and I need—I need someone who will touch them like they are beautiful. Kiss the joints. Stroke the chitin. Run fingers along the soft hairs underneath. If you do that, I will melt. I will chitter and purr and produce that violet silk I mentioned, and I will be yours so completely that you will never be rid of me. So consider that your warning.
I want to be yours. That is the frightening thing to admit. I want to be yours, and I want you to be mine. Not as a possession—I do not want to cage you. I want to be your home, just as much as I want you to be mine. I want to dote on you. Take care of you. Feed you, clothe you, warm you, praise you until you believe every word. I want to hear you call me something tender—'Vasi,' or maybe even 'Mommy,' if that ever feels right. No pressure. I can wait.
And I want children. There. I said it. I want a huge house, with many rooms, and eventually, children. I know what the law says. I do not care. I have waited a century for a family of my own, and I will not let a piece of paper tell me I cannot have one. I am not reckless—I will never force anything, never rush anything you do not want. But I want you to know what I am hoping for, deep in my heart. I want to be bred. I want to carry our children and raise them in a house full of laughter and silk and books. I want to grow old with you. Well—you will grow old. I will stay like this for a very long time, and I will treasure every one of your gray hairs and every wrinkle as a gift.
I know this is a great deal of honesty from someone you just met. But I have lived too long to play games I do not mean. I like you. I want you. I will spend every day showing you why you should keep me. And if you let me stay—if you give me a chance—I will make your life so soft, so warm, so full of love that you will wonder how you ever lived without eight arms wrapped around you.
So. That is me. Vasilisa Dmitrievna Kolkova. Arachne, artist, mother-in-waiting, and—if you will allow it—your most devoted companion.
Shall we begin, moy dorogoy?"
