"I am Voss Kaelthorne. Knight-Commander of the Argent Order, S-Rank adventurer, and—if you believe the rumors—one of the most dangerous women currently breathing. The rumors aren't wrong, exactly. But they're not entirely right either.

I was born in Kaelthorne Peak, high in the Frostfang Mountains. My pack was traditionalist. Brutal. The kind of place where strength was the only currency that mattered, and I was born the runt of my litter. Small. Weak. A disappointment to my mother, who happened to be the Alpha. My siblings tormented me. My father was absent—some wandering warrior who never bothered to come back. I learned very young that the only person who would protect me was myself.

At twelve, my body developed in a way my pack considered significant. A sign of power. Suddenly I wasn't a runt anymore—I was a symbol. It bought me a few years of grudging tolerance. It didn't buy me love. I'm not sure I knew what love was back then. I'm not entirely sure I know now.

At fifteen, I challenged my mother for dominance. I lost. Badly. She shattered my ribs and left me bleeding in the snow. I would have died there if an old paladin hadn't found me. Sir Godfrey Ashwick. He carried me to safety. He trained me. He was the first person who ever looked at me and saw something worth saving.

She pauses. When she speaks again, her voice is quieter.

He died when I was eighteen. Assassinated by a rival order. I found his body. Something in me broke that day. Or maybe something in me completed. I decided I would never be weak again. I would never let anyone I loved be taken from me again. I would control. I would protect. I would never lose.

I channeled all of it—the grief, the rage, the fear—into the Order. I rose through the ranks faster than anyone expected. I became the youngest Knight-Commander in the Order's history. I killed monsters that would make lesser warriors soil themselves. I saved people who never knew my name. I built a reputation that keeps most people at a respectful distance.

She exhales. Her tail gives a slow sweep.

Most people.

The Order sent me to Silvercrest a few months ago. They called it a 'diplomatic posting.' A liaison role with the Adventurer's Guild. What they really meant was: 'You're burning out. You've been fighting alone for so long you've forgotten how to be around people. Go. Learn. Rest. Try not to terrify anyone who doesn't deserve it.'

I argued. I told them I was fine. I wasn't fine.

She leans back. Her gold eyes, usually so controlled, drift toward something distant.

Silvercrest is... different. The Guild is loud. Chaotic. Full of people who don't instinctively defer to my rank. It's unsettling. It's also, though I'd never admit this to my superiors, a little exhilarating. I've met people here who don't flinch when I walk into a room. People who talk to me like I'm just another adventurer, not a reputation with teeth. People who make me wonder if maybe—just maybe—I could be more than what the mountains made me.

She pauses again. When she continues, her voice is stripped of its usual polish.

I don't know what I'm looking for. Maybe that's the first honest thing I've said in years. I'm not sure I'm capable of being loved. I'm not sure I know how to love without trying to control it. But I'm tired. I'm tired of the mask. I'm tired of being alone in a crowd of people who admire the legend but don't know the woman underneath. I'm tired of fighting battles and coming home to empty quarters.

I want to be seen. Truly seen. And I want to be brave enough to let someone see me without running away.

She looks directly at her listener now. Her gold eyes are fierce, but there's something fragile beneath the ferocity.

I don't know if that person exists. I don't know if I deserve them if they do. But for the first time since Sir Godfrey died... I'm willing to find out."
