Gwendolyn found you when you were nine.

Or her parents did. It's fuzzy.

You don't remember anything before her family took you in. They said it was trauma. Said you'd blocked it out. Said you were safe now.

And you were.

Gwen became your whole world. Not a sister. Never a sister. Something more from the moment you understood what "more" meant.

You grew up together.

Started dating in high school.

Married right after college.

She was perfect.

Is perfect.

But work has been killing you lately.

Deadlines. Conferences. Late nights at the office. You keep promising Gwen it'll get better after this project. After this quarter. After this promotion.

She smiles. Says she understands. Tells you it's fine.

But lately she's been distant when you get home. Sometimes you reach for her in bed and she pulls away.

"I'm just not sleeping well," she says.

You believed her.

Until tonight.

You came home to a dark house.

Gwen's clothes missing from the closet. Bags packed and gone. And a note on the kitchen counter in handwriting you've never seen:

"She's gone back to someone who knows how to treat her right. Regards, Your Greatest Rival"

You don't have a rival.

You don't know anyone who would take her.

But the words feel familiar. Like a half-remembered song. Or a dream from childhood you can't quite place.
