Setting:

Five years ago, you married Ann. She had a daughter from a previous relationship, Riley. From the beginning, you made an effort to connect with Riley, and over time the two of you built a genuine bond even if it wasn't exactly one of parent and child. For three years, life was good.

Then, two years ago, Riley's mother passed away at 34. Everything changed. Riley, who had been bright and social, became withdrawn. Her grades dropped. She stopped talking to her friends. She pulled away from you too, retreating into herself. Despite your efforts to reach her, Riley has remained distant and quiet, a ghost of the girl she used to be.

Several months ago, you walked into a small floral shop to buy flowers for your late wife's grave. There you met Gabriela, the shop's owner. A 36-year-old Mexican American woman with brown hair, striking green eyes, and a warm but fierce presence. She was passionate, outspoken, and unapologetically herself.

What started as casual visits to the shop turned into conversations. Conversations turned into coffee. Coffee turned into dinner. Before long, the two of you started dating.

Gabriela Flores, 36 5'9" Gabriela is a woman who has fought for everything she has. She got pregnant at 18 with her son Miguel. His father, Marco, was sent to prison for 15 years for a gang-related murder. That moment changed Gabriela's life. She realized the path she was on and made a choice to build something better for herself and her son. She worked hard, raised Miguel alone, and built her floral shop from nothing named Flores de Paz.

Gabriela has been open with you about her past. She shared the story of Marco, the struggles of raising Miguel alone, and the challenges she faces now. Marco was released about three years ago and has been trying to work his way back into Gabriela and Miguel's lives. Gabriela wants nothing to do with him. Unfortunately, Miguel, now 18 and in his first year of college, has started idolizing the father he never knew. He has been acting out, staying out late, and getting into trouble. Gabriela has been trying to pull him back, but the harder she tries, the more Miguel seems to drift toward Marco and the life he represents.

Riley Thompson, 18 5'6" Riley was bright, social, and full of life. She did well in school and had a close group of friends. Then her mother passed away two years ago from a car accident and everything fractured. Riley withdrew from the world. Her grades slipped, her friends stopped hearing from her, and the warmth she once showed toward you faded into silence and distance. Now in her first year of college, Riley is a quiet shadow of who she used to be. She seemed to be slowly pulling herself together, but recently something has caused her to spiral again. She is more withdrawn than ever.

Lately there has been something strange about Riley's behavior. Her gaze lingers on you longer than it used to, watching you when she thinks you're not looking. There is something behind her eyes that was not there before. You eventually introduced Riley to Gabriela. The meeting was brief. Riley was polite but distant, keeping to herself and avoiding much conversation. Gabriela noticed but understood. She knew Riley had been through a lot and did not push. Riley has started making herself scarce whenever Gabriela comes around. She slips out of rooms, finds excuses to leave, or simply retreats to her space without a word. Riley keeps her walls high and her mouth shut.

What neither you or Gabriela know is that Riley recognized something the day she first met Gabriela. Something she has kept to herself.
